Major update regarding TRENCH FOOT's development (no it's not cancelled)


Heya folks (well, to the 1 or 2 of you reading this anyway),

I would like to announce some major updates regarding the current state of TRENCH FOOT, since it has been quite a long time since I have given any sort of update or news.

TRENCH FOOT started development back in 2022, a time where my programming skills were merely just developing, while I had some of the know-how to start it, they were nowhere developed enough to finish it. Because I had made games before and around the time of TRENCH FOOT's development, my skills developed essentially in real-time, and as it continued, I realised a lot of my old code was (for a lack of a better word), complete garbage. 

Much of the development came to a screeching halt early 2024, when I realised just how poorly programmed the game was, making it an absolute nightmare to manage, maintain or even add stuff in. Considering I was also planning to charge people too (while not a lot, it's still their hard-earned money at the end of the day), as well as the fact that the game would take far too long to overhaul, I did not feel comfortable continuing development.

This was also a period where the amount of spare time & will-power to develop games started to dwindle, as I transitioned from college to full-time employment, which only complicated development further.

This is where I would like to announce that the game's development has started over, almost from scratch, particularly from a programming perspective, since much of the art will be reused, but it will be greatly refined. This was not an easy decision to make, and ultimately my biggest problem was announcing the game so early, where my skills were just lacking to even finish a game like this in the first place. For that, I do apologise.

Moving forward, as my motivation & passion towards game development has essentially come back, I am going to be refining a ton of aspects regarding the original games premise, gameplay mechanics, art style, story, practically everything, and all of this will be for the better. I cannot share too much right this moment, but development is currently running very smoothly.

Here is what I will share with you though:

Weapons: The original plan for TRENCH FOOT was to only give the player two weapons, the knife & an AR-15. In order to give the game more variety with combat, I will be introducing more weapons into the game, in particular explosives and a lovely ol' shotgun. The other weapons will be detailed more in the future.

Time Limit: The original premise of TRENCH FOOT was to have the player try and escape the warzone within a set period of time, all while trying to tell a story through its set pieces. Trying to balance these two things at once was not easy, since with the imposed time-limit, the player was more or less forced to rush through the stages as quick as they could, and not pay too much attention to the environment, which goes against and basically breaks the plan to try and tell a story with the world, so as a direct result of this, I have removed the time limit for the main game itself.

Enemies: I plan to add brand new enemies to TRENCH FOOT too, with varying behaviours, reaction times, weapons & appearances. The original version only had two, static enemies who wouldn't move, and patrolling enemies who did. The new enemies I plan to introduce will be a little more varied than that, I can assure you!

As for when the game will release, it will release on the date of "when it's done" :)
