1 Year of Development - General Updates
It's been exactly 1 year ago today since Trench Foot commenced development! It started out as a small top-down shooter, with very basic blood effects, and ever since, it's just gotten bigger and bigger.
I want to give a small general update in regards to progress of the game. Trench Foot has been undergoing some changes under the hood, to make it a much more enjoyable experience overall. This has been a lengthy process, but progress is being made.
If you've been following the Trench Foot twitter page, you would've noticed that there is now lighting in the cave areas. The lighting itself was actually programmed by Jobo, and you can find a video of it here made by Shaun Spalding. The lighting has been incorporated in multiple ways, such as a subtle flash whenever you or an enemy fires their weapon. There are also fog lights scattered across the area too, which I think helps to add to the creepy atmosphere of the level.
Another major change is some of the tilesets throughout the levels. They don't look as basic as they once did, helping to not only strain the player, but to also add a level of detail throughout. This definitely helps to make certain levels, such as the caves, look much more interesting and detailed, rather than repetitive and harsh looking.
One final addition I'd like to discuss is the inclusion of a menu system (very exciting). It's very basic at the moment, but essentially you can change the volume of sound effects & the ambiance. More options will be included in the future, such as accessibility options, graphical options & control mappings.
There have also been a few more additions too, but I'd like to talk about them much later on in the future, so do stay tuned for further updates.
In the last devlog, I talked about the game not being far away from completion. This is not entirely wrong, but due to the amount of spare time I have to develop the game, it's taken much longer than expected, so please don't expect the game to be released by the end of this year or anything. Keep in mind, I am practically the only person working on it, with assistance from a few others.
If I were to guess, Trench Foot will most likely be finished by Q2 2024 at the earliest, though please don't count on it. The game needs more time in the oven.
Thanks for reading this devlog, and thank you to everyone who's been following this game for as long as it's been worked on for! Means the world to me, even if it's only a few people who's interested.
