General update regarding development
Hey there, I know there probably isn't many people viewing this at the moment, but either way, I'd like to give a general update regarding the development of Trench Foot.
Currently, everything is looking good for the game, it's definitely come a long way since I first created the page, let alone when I first started prototyping the game, and personally, I don't think it's going to be too long until a release is clear.
You may've noticed that I've updated the page, to specify that the time limit has been increased to 20 minutes. This is because I wanted more room to include levels with the game, as it's very unrealistic to have a decent number of levels for the player to complete within the span of 10 minutes. It's just not feasible in the slightest.
Speaking of levels, you may've also noticed that I've also updated the page to not specify the number of levels.
Originally, I wanted to include 30, however, even with the 20 minute time limit, that's not going to be entirely possible, unless I remove a ton of aspects, which I do not want to do.
Instead, I'm aiming for around half the original amount, so around 15. This is not a definite number, it may be higher, or if I really have to, it may be lower. However, as a compromise, many of the levels are quite open and large, meaning you have more time to explore the levels.
Now, there have been some additions to the game that I'd like to talk about, such as the individual time limits of areas. These are included as a way for the player to keep track of how long they have left in a specific level of the game.
These are flexible, so if you spend too much time in a level, it will then eat up however much longer you spent into the next level's time limit.
However, on the flipside, if you manage to exit the level under the time limit, whatever time you have left will then be added on to the next level's time limit as well, giving you more room for error in a level, or more time to explore, for example.
Another thing that's been added to the game, as you've probably seen in the screenshots, is that civilians are fully implemented into the game, giving the player some level of responsibility. What I mean by this is that you are liable for anything that happens to any of the civilians you come across.
Essentially, this means that you need to protect them from crossfire between you and enemies, as well as anything else you may be faced with on your journey.
Additionally, some civilians will want you to take them to the end of the level, so for this, you can get them to follow you by being in their general vicinity & pressing the SPACE bar. Press it again, to get them to stop dead in their tracks, which is very useful when dealing with enemy fire.
Now, I am aware that some people may not like having to carry civilians from one area to another, like how you collect Flickies in Sonic 3D Blast, however, it is not required in the slightest. You can simply leave them in the area you found them, assuming they're not in any danger. If you do decide to guide them to the end, however, the civilians are more than willing to pay for any trouble, with useful items you may need on your journey.
Speaking of items, there are 3 types of items you want to look out for:
- Guns: These will have any left-over ammunition, for you to take for your own weapon.
- Med-kits: These are used to help heal wounds and stop heavy bleeding, from gunfire.
- Drugs: While definitely not the healthiest thing to have at hand, these will help your vitality to increase faster, however, don't take too many at once, otherwise they could have life threatening effects.
The drugs are the newer addition to the items list, which as stated, can help your vitality (AKA, your heath) to climb back up to 100, much faster than it would without them. However, these will have an effect on your vision, as well as the amount of damage you take from bullets. Essentially, you only ever want to be using drugs in a last-resort situation.
The recommended dosage is 3 pills, however, the maximum amount you can take is 6. Go over that maximum amount, and the consequences are lethal, so be very careful when taking them.
Now then, as for the general completion of the game, I'd say the game is around 60% finished. Many of the mechanics are in place & are fully functional, with around 40% of the levels completed. It's still a bit away from release, however like I said, hopefully it's not too far away now.
Finally, I want to talk about the price of the game.
Considering it's a reasonably short game, I currently have it listed for $2. I know a lot of people don't want to pay for a game like this, and I do apologise if you are amongst that crowd. However, for what you get, I'd say $2 is definitely worth the price for a 20 minute game, all with sprites & assets made from the ground up, as well as a portion of the sounds you hear throughout the game.
I do hope you like what you see at the moment, I'm definitely enjoying developing the game and I do hope to see you when it's all done!
